All aboard to Lundy Island

Reflecting thoughts of our trip to Lundy Island in July from Bill Young, CEO Addington Fund…

Lundy Island always holds very special memories for me as it was the first boys’ trip that I can remember going on with my late father in 1964 aged 3. In those days you boarded a paddle driven, steam powered ferry and had to disembark onto a smaller boat to land.

I was therefore delighted to find that our Southwest volunteer Trevor Glasper organised a regular fundraising trip to the island on board the ever-reliable MS Oldenburg. This year was the first time we had run the trip for three years and we could not have picked a better day for our farmers and Addington supporters’ trip on July 17th when 154 passengers boarded the vessel in Bideford for the 12-mile crossing.

This year the cost of the trip was sponsored for the first time by Mole Valley Farmers and it was great to have some of their team on board. We were able to spend the whole day on the island in glorious weather before taking the scenic trip home coming up the North Devon Coast via Hartland Point and Clovelly.

It is a long day but well worth the visit, as the Island has so much to offer in terms of history, wildlife and spectacular views. For the less energetic there is also nice pub, shop, lighthouses and uncrowded beaches to visit.

We were also able to do the usual fundraising on the way back, holding a raffle that raised over £500 for the Fund which along with the proceeds of the trip will all go to the next Addington good cause.

Our thanks go to Trevor Glasper and his team for organising the trip and over seeing the bookings, Mole Valley Farmers for their wonderful sponsorship, the magnificent crew of the MS Oldenburg and to our own Annie Winn who ensured the trip was the great success it was...
